Medan Zoo has a total area of
30 hectares. The location is about 10 Km from the city of Medan to Berastagi direction. Medan Zoo could become tourist attractions for your reference and families who want to vacation.  Medan Zoo has a collection of various kinds of tropical animals, mammals such as bears, tigers, lions, elephants, reptiles, birds and others.

The Medan Zoo Food Aid (MZFA) is a project dedicated to improve the distribution of healthier food in the Medan zoo as well as improve the overall health of the animals there. The Medan Zoo of Sumatera Indonesia needs help doing so since it is not supported by any NGO and therefore funds within the zoo are limited. Due tofinancial issues, the zoo cannot afford to buy fresh products to feed its animals. Instead, the zoo resorts to fruits and vegetables that are spoiled, hence considered unhealthy for the animals. Not only is the food unhealthy, the animals do not eat sufficiently enough due to the uneatable conditions of the food given to them. As a consequence, some of the animals are developing illnesses and some are dying.

This issue has been occurring for a considerate amount of years now and it is having detrimental consequences on the health of their animals including those who are endangered. It is also important to note that such issues do not only occur in the Medan Zoo, but other zoos in Indonesia aswell. It is necessary to solve this problem because zoos such as the Medan Zoo play an important role in the conservation effort to protect our wonderful endangered species. The MZFA aims to resolve this problem by educating the Medan Zoo on how to self-produce and manage their naturally grown crops. The project proposes to plant fruit trees, vegetables, elephant grass and more on the property of the zoo, since not all of the space is used for animal enclosures and tourist attractions.

Implementation of this project we will be planting a variety of tree fruits, such as rambutan, mango, mangosteen, durian, Rambe, Duku, kuini, bananas, watermelon, oranges, papaya, pineapple, cantaloupe, cucumber, cocoa, coffee, corn, etc.  We will also planting variety of grasses to eat the elephant, deer, horses, deer, and others with a variety of grasses such as elephant grass, sugar cane, corn, paitan, and planting some trees who bark and leaf consumed by the animal.
